Keystone

Keystone is an air-gapped hardware crypto wallet developed by Lixin Liu. He and his team of developers left the Cobo Vault company to create the Keystone Wallet on the 1st of June 2021.

What is Keystone?

The Keystone wallet is a security wonder that joins an exclusive group of hardware wallets that don't require an internet connection. It provides extremely high protection against hackers, malware, and viruses because it is totally air-gapped. Unlike several other hardware wallets that contain USB connections and Bluetooth, your private keys are kept in cold storage, and you must scan the QR code displayed on Keystone's screen to complete transactions.

Keystone offers three main cold storage devices. The $119 Keystone Essential is designed for long-term investors. With a mass of 115g, it is the lightest of the three. It works with rechargeable batteries but does not include one.

The Keystone Pro costs $169 and is designed for crypto enthusiasts. It weighs 132g and has a rechargeable battery, making it slightly denser than the Essential.

Lastly, with a mass of 189.5g, the Keystone ultimate is the heaviest of the three. It costs $479 and is geared toward institutional traders. It also has a rechargeable battery.

How to open a Keystone account?

After unboxing and booting up your Keystone device, go to the Keystone authentication website and scan the QR code on the screen with your Keystone device. Set your password and click on “Create Wallet” to generate a recovery phrase. Make sure to write this phrase down on a piece of paper or somewhere safe. The next screen will contain a “Watch only Wallet” option – select the Keystone App. After this step, select your desired cryptocurrencies and your Keystone account is ready to be used.

What are the Pros and Cons of Keystone?

Some of the perks of the Keystone devices are that it has a MicroSD firmware update system, fingerprint authentication, self-destruct mechanism in case of another person trying to use brute force to get in the device, or its compatibility with other wallets. The cons involve its price compared to its competitors and performing frequent transactions can be bothering since a user has to put in the address every time for every transaction.
